August 18, 2010 - Local Firm Proud to Continue Sponsoring Elite Cross Country Skier

Local architect firm FSC is so proud of Yellowknife's Olympic participant Thomsen D'Hont for his efforts at the 2010 Winter Olympics; they've decided to sponsor him again.

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (August 18 2010) -- In order for Canadian amateur athletes to reach their potential, they have to overcome significant financial barriers. Without sponsorship, chasing an Olympic dream becomes more of a pipe dream. FSC made the difference for this local skier.

“FSC is proud to help him pursue his athletic goals of representing the North and Canada on the international stage,” says Warren McLeod, Principal at FSC Architects & Engineers.

D’Hont worked hard to reach the 2010 Olympic Games, joining the cross country team as a forerunner. They provide a crucial role; skiing the courses before each cross-country and Nordic combined event at the Olympics. Being invited to join the team as a forerunner is a huge step in D’Hont’s quest to become a future Olympian.

“Being selected to the forerunner team shows that Thomsen has the potential to realize those dreams,” says McLeod. “His commitment to cross-country skiing sets a great example for youth in the North—with hard work and discipline, anything is possible.”

Only 22-years-old, this Métis Nordic Skier is determined to qualify for the 2014 Winter Games and race on the World Cup circuit.

“This season I will continue to base myself out of 2010 Olympic legacy town of Whistler, BC for my third year,” says D’Hont. “The goal for the 2010/2011 season is to be racing fast for the first major Canadian races in December and January so I can qualify for World Under-23 World Championships in Estonia, and for the European OPA race circuit.”

D’Hont is currently the only high-level Yellowknife cross country skier regularly racing in the National racing circuit as well as abroad.

“My past and current successes are thanks to the support of businesses in the community of Yellowknife that allow me to continue what I am doing,” says D’Hont. “I hope to inspire others, both young and old, to show them that amazing things are possible through hard work, determination and long-term goal setting.”

July 30, 2010 - Local Architects to Continue Sponsoring Cross Country Siblings

Local firm FSC Architects and Engineers has agreed to sponsor Whitehorse's cross country skiing siblings Team Nishikawa.

Whitehorse, YT (July 30, 2010) - Graham and Emily Nishikawa, brother and sister, are recognized athletes in Whitehorse and active members of the national ski team community. Their biggest sponsor is FSC Architects & Engineers, who is helping them reach their goal of representing Canada at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

“We are proud to provide sponsorship to Emily and Graham for the upcoming ski season,” says Timothy Turner-Davis, Whitehorse Branch Office Manager at FSC. “We wish them all the best as they pursue success on the world stage of Cross Country Ski Racing.”

In order for amateur athletes to reach their potential, they have to spend their time training and cannot hold a traditional job. Without sponsorship, it becomes impossible to put in the time required.

“We are both rising stars in Canadian skiing,” says Graham. “We are looking for financial support from northern businesses to help us continue with our dreams of becoming Olympians.”

Born and raised in Whitehorse, the siblings started skiing as young children in the Jackrabbit and Yukon Ski Team programs. They moved up the ranks from there, and are now senior skiers representing the Yukon and Canada at national and international events.

The Nishikawa siblings are both recognized athletes in Whitehorse, and participate and volunteer at many local events. Their career goals have them living abroad, however.

“We are currently training out of Canmore, Alberta, and are members of the National Training Centre.” Graham competes at the top level of International cross country skiing on the World Cup circuit, and Emily is a rising star both nationally and internationally.

Graham has represented Canada at seventeen World Cup races all over the world, and is a three-time Overall North American Cup Champion. Emily represented Canada at the 2010 World U23 Championships in Germany, and was a medalist in the Canadian Winter Games of 2007. Their other goals include racing in the 2011 World Championships and becoming the 2011 Male and Female National Champions.

June 14 2010 - FSC Architects and Engineers-designed RCMP facility sets new standard for Northern buildings

Nunavut RCMP V Division and Iqaluit Detachment seeking to become first LEED Silver accredited building in Northern Canada

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (June 14, 2010) - FSC Architects & Engineers is proud to announce the completion and opening of the new Nunavut RCMP V Division and Iqaluit Detachment building. FSC provided both architectural and engineering services for the facility, which is seeking LEED Silver accreditation. If successful, the building will be the most Northerly LEED Silver building in Canada.

A number of technical innovations set the building apart from typical Northern architecture and engineering. Central to the design is a large, unique atrium referred to as “the iceberg.” An idea that came out a visioning workshop with Nunavut elders, the iceberg-shaped atrium was incorporated to provide natural ventilation in the summer and shoulder season, daylight to both floors and an interior vista that will expand the horizon during the winter. At night, lights in the iceberg will make it appear to glow. The iceberg also creates an important sense of transparency and openness despite the facility’s strict security.

Other technical innovations that support the facility’s LEED Silver accreditation are sprayed foam exterior insulation, and the use of a thermosyphon foundation not typically found on larger buildings. This provides passive freezing of the ground to create a stable base for shallow concrete footings that allow the building to sit level with the surrounding grade. In contrast with similar sized buildings in Iqaluit, which sit elevated on a steel pile structure, this makes the facility a more welcoming and inviting place for the people of Nunavut to visit. Even the drinking fountains are environmentally conscious, with water being cooled passively by a water circulation line from the city main.

“The RCMP building in Nunavut is truly unique in the North in terms of design, engineering and environmental impact,” says Rod Kirkwood, Principal at FSC. “We combined design that’s based on the landscape with new and existing technology that was applied in innovative ways. The result is a building that improves the quality of life not just of the people who work in it, but of the entire community. It sets a new standard for what buildings in the North can and should be.”

February 15, 2010 - Congratulations to Yellowknife cross-country skier Thomsen D'hont on the participation at the 2010 Winter Olympics

February 15, 2009—FSC Architects & Engineers congratulates Yellowknife cross-country skier Thomsen D’hont for taking part in the 2010 Winter Olympics as part of the cross-country skiing forerunner team.

Forerunners ski the competition courses before each cross-country and Nordic combined event at the Olympics. This crucial role ensures that the first skier isn’t slowed by fresh snow while the last skier benefits from a course that has been skied clear by the competitors before him. Being named to the forerunner team is based in part on whether the selected skiers will benefit from the experience in their quest to become future Olympians.

“It’s been a pleasure to watch Thomsen progress in his sport over the years, and FSC is proud to help him pursue his athletic goals of representing the North and Canada on the international stage,” says Warren McLeod, Prinicpal at FSC Architects & Engineers. “Being selected to the forerunner team shows that Thomsen has the potential to realize those dreams. His commitment to cross-country skiing sets a great example for youth in the North—with hard work and discipline, anything is possible.”

February 3, 2009—FSC Architects & Engineers congratulates Yellowknife snowboarder Andrew Matthews on his performance at his first World Cup competition. Andrew finished 33rd in the slopestyle event at the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup 2010 held in Calgary on January 30.

FSC is proud to support up-and-coming Northern athletes such as Andrew. The commitment to snowboarding that Andrew demonstrates is a great example for youth in the North, whether their dreams are athletic, academic, artistic, cultural or technical. By following his dreams from Yellowknife to international competitions, Andrew has shown the importance of facing challenges head-on in order to succeed.

“The World Cup was a great experience for me. It was pretty amazing to be a part of the first ever Slopestyle World Cup. I was doing the most difficult run I’ve ever tried in a competition, because I needed to in order to make finals. I wasn’t able to land it clean for the contest, but I’m glad that it pushed me to try some new tricks," says Andrew. "The competition really put into perspective what I need to do in order to achieve the high goals that I’ve set for myself such as winning at the World Cup level. It has motivated me to train harder and smarter. Competing in the World Cup was a big step in my athletic career, and I’m very grateful to have the solid support of sponsors like FSC that continue to help me achieve my goals.”

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (January 27, 2010)—FSC Architects & Engineers is proud to congratulate Yellowknife snowboarder Andrew Matthews on qualifying to compete in his first World Cup event. Andrew qualified by finishing seventh in the slopestyle category at the first stop of the Canada~Snowboard Tour in Calgary on January 17, despite competing with an injured back that forced him to withdraw from the halfpipe competition the previous day.

“Overcoming the challenges of an injury says a lot about Andrew’s character,” says Warren McLeod, a Partner at FSC. “Qualifying for a World Cup event despite having an injured back illustrates Andrew’s drive and determination. It sets a great example for up-and-coming Northern athletes and youth that success is not possible without overcoming challenges along the way.”

Andrew, 21, began snowboarding on small hills around Yellowknife at the age of nine. Since then he’s competed at the national and international level, including the Arctic Winter Games. Andrew currently trains with the Whistler Valley Snowboard Club in British Columbia.

“I'm really happy that I was able to compete and ride as well as I did in the slopestyle considering I was just coming off an injury. I was a bit nervous seeing as this was my first contest of the season, and that the stakes were pretty high!” Andrew explains, “That being said, I was doing my tricks better than I've ever done. My confidence is really high and I'll be carrying that into the World Cup. Qualifying for a World Cup is a big step in my career, and I’m grateful that I have solid support from sponsors like FSC, helping me pursue my dream of one day winning a medal in the Olympic Winter Games.”

November 30, 2009 - FSC supports Northern youth through Whitehorse Mustangs Hockey Club sponsorship

Sponsorship will help Whitehorse players and parents with the high-costs of playing competitive hockey in the North

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (November 30, 2009) - FSC Architects & Engineers is proud to announce our continued support of Northern youth through our sponsorship of the Whitehorse Mustangs Hockey Club (WMHC).

“Running a competitive hockey program in the Yukon is difficult due to our relative isolation from proper competition. Without the generosity of FSC and our other sponsors, the program would be in jeopardy,” says Jay Glass, Head Coach of the Whitehorse FSC Bantam Mustangs. “We are trying to teach through hockey many valuable life skills, such as competitive spirit, mental toughness, accountability, integrity, sportsmanship, sacrifice and hard work.”

The annual budget of the WMHC is over $100,000. This doesn’t include costs parents must pay such as league fees and travel costs for games and tournaments in British Columbia and Alberta. To defray these costs, the WMHC holds fundraising activities, but still requires corporate sponsors in order to make hockey accessible to all kids in Whitehorse.

“We’re in the business of designing buildings and infrastructure that create rewarding experiences and contribute to quality of life,” says Warren McLeod, a Partner at FSC. “Sponsoring the Mustangs is a natural extension of that. It helps the club contribute to quality-of-life for the youth of Whitehorse.”

October 2nd, 2008 - FSC Awarded top marks by employees

FSC recognized as one of Canada's Top 100 employers for 2009

Yellowknife (October 2, 2008) – FSC Architects & Engineers is proud to announce that we have made the list of Canada’s Top 100 Employers as determined by Mediacorp Canada.

“Once again, please accept our congratulations on making this year's Top 100 list. We had a considerable increase in the number of applications this year, so your accomplishment is especially well-deserved.” Said Tony Meehan of Mediacorp.

“The road to getting on this list started back in 2006 for our new group of owners,” says Warren McLeod, “as a firm that is committed to providing top-level service to our clients, we decided that it was necessary to provide the same to our staff.” To determine where to start, FSC polled its employees to see what kind of benefits interested them and to find out what they liked and disliked about the firm. “It was a nervous time for us, we were unsure what to expect in the results,“ says Jerry Jaud “however, looking back, it provided us with the key information that we needed to make the decisions and take the steps that we felt would help us to retain our staff.”

Valerie Stark, FSC’s Human Resource Specialist, has been impressed with the firm’s commitment to its employees, “The FSC owners have recognized that our most important asset is our people and have worked hard to ensure that our staff have benefits that meet or exceed industry standards.” A detailed feature showcasing the Top 100 Employers in Canada will be available in Maclean’s magazine.

April 11, 2008 - Cultural Leadership Alive and Strong in Nunavut - new Inuit Cultural Learning Facility

Nunavut, April 11, 2008:

FSC Architects & Engineers has been awarded the commission for the new Inuit Cultural Learning Facility to be constructed in Clyde River, (Kangiqtugaapik), Nunavut.

The Inuit, through time, have passed down a myriad of variations of countless stories from Elders to Youth. These stories are the vessels for their morals, their Inuit Quajimajatugangit (IQ); they are lined with metaphors that merge Human with Nature with Spirit; they are made with ancient tools in the modern paradigm: the Oral Tradition.

The Inuit of today are growing up in a world in which their traditional way of life is slipping away, just as the relationships and language that are integral to the storytelling process are being severed by the lack of a culturally driven educational framework. Such an educational framework does not exist for the Inuit, and it is in this void that the Piqqusilirivvik Vision has taken root:

“to strengthen, promote and enhance Inuit knowledge in a unique setting”

With this key message in mind, Piqqusilirivvik shall be designed by Inuit for Inuit, facilitated by the FSC team, and will be the springboard for an innovative learning experience for Inuktitut speaking students that is immediately recognizable as the embodiment of the Piqqusilirivvik Vision.

It will advocate pride in culture, overtly demonstrate cultural independence, and illustrate an active and sustainable model of land as teacher. It will be an icon for the people of Nunavut.

As FSC Intern Architect in Iqaluit, Josh Armstrong notes, “I believe wholeheartedly in what this project is about. I see in its concept new opportunities for all Nunavummiut; the young; the old; and most importantly, for those, like so many I have grown up with and call friends and family, who have not found their way in the standard education system. This project has the potential to give new confidence and sense of self to those who are seeking it.”

The project is being completed in conjunction with the Department of Cultural, Language, Elders and Youth and the Department of Community and Government Services. The FSC Architectural team is complemented by world-recognized firm Fielding Nair International, Architects and Change Agents for Education.

‘Open’ is the word to describe the new Acute Care Hospital that encompasses the major care departments, including Emergency, Diagnostic Imaging and Labs, Inpatient Units and Surgical Suites. Designed with an ‘Open Arms’ concept, the building consists of two arms spreading out from the central core providing open views to the city centre and out to the bay and land that stretches beyond.

“Openness was a key desire expressed by the elders during the planning process,” says FSC Principal and Regional Manager (Nunavut) Terry Gray. “Taking the open concept, the design team created functional and productive spaces while still allowing for healing spaces free from disturbance.”

The sustainable design uses residual heat extracted from the city’s Power Plant. Waste heat from generating equipment serves as the primary heat source for both the new and existing hospitals significantly reducing the operating and maintenance costs.

FSC Architects & Engineers complete design of new Trades Training Centre in Nunavut

Nunavut, August 13, 2007:

FSC Architects & Engineers has been awarded the commission for the new state-of-the-art Nunavut Trades Training Centre (NTTC). In conjunction with the Department of Education, Nunavut Arctic College and the Department of Community and Government Services, FSC Architects & Engineers have commenced design of the facility to respond to the growing demand for trained trades people. Founded in 1957 by the Rankin Inlet Mining Company to extract nickel and copper ore, the entire Kivalliq region faces a huge potential economic boom from its rich mineral resources.

The 1595m2 space includes classroom space, labs and shops grouped to take advantage of natural light and views of the Rankin Inlet Bay and community. “The design is a true reflection of its purpose,” says FSC Architect Harriet Burdett-Moulton of the building’s clean industrial aesthetic design.

But not to put form ahead of function, the building itself serves as a teaching tool with the structural components of the building as well as the mechanical and electrical infrastructure of the building exposed to allow the students to see the internal workings of the building. “We focused on creating a truly unique learning environment focused on the needs of the community. Encouraging women to enter the trades was key so we included a separate women’s student lounge for their exclusive use.”
